From Vines to Vision: Drawing Inspiration from Cifarelli’s Nursery
If I had a nursery, it would be a lot like Cifarelli’s in Southold, on the North Fork of Long Island.
For the past two years, I’ve watched this innovative nursery grow into its six-acre haven, becoming a place where nature and creativity coexist harmoniously. Each visit feels like a fresh exploration, as Cifarelli’s continuously expands its offerings, bringing new life to its flowering plants and shrubs while staying true to its sustainable roots.
The sustainability story at Cifarelli’s is ever-present. As you wander the grounds, it’s hard not to admire the thoughtful use of local resources. The fences and sun sheds are crafted from the vines of grapes from nearby wineries, an ingenious way to repurpose what might otherwise go to waste. These natural elements blend seamlessly with the landscape, enhancing the beauty of the plants while telling a story of connection between the nursery and the rich agricultural history of the North Fork.
Then there’s the use of recycled metal, which has become a staple of the nursery’s design. These pieces, often cherished artifacts in their own right, are artfully placed among the shrub beds, adding a touch of rustic charm that complements the vibrant greenery. It’s a perfect example of how something old and worn can find new purpose and become part of a living, breathing environment.
During one of my visits, I had the pleasure of speaking with David Cifarellis, the visionary behind this remarkable space. His passion for the nursery is palpable, and his plans for the future are as exciting as they are thoughtful. He spoke of his vision to create a wine-tasting shed on the property, a place where visitors can relax, sample local wines, and take in the beauty of the surroundings. In addition to the tasting shed, David plans to develop outdoor living room spaces where guests can unwind, explore the property, and truly immerse themselves in the experience of Cifarelli’s.
