Collaboration in California: Nancy Fire x Katrina Hernandez
In the bustling streets of Los Angeles, where creativity permeates the air, I recently had the pleasure of meeting Katrina Hernandez, a designer whose flair for blending global aesthetics with contemporary finesse is truly remarkable. Our introduction, facilitated by a mutual friend, quickly blossomed into a kinship fueled by our shared roots in New York City and a mutual love for artistry and design.
Katrina's journey in the world of design is as captivating as her creations. Hailing from St. Michaels, Maryland, she was raised in a family where creativity was not just encouraged but celebrated. Her early exposure to the antiques trade through her mother and grandmother instilled in her a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and design. Embarking on her professional path, Katrina initially delved into the realm of fashion, honing her skills as a design assistant at Gap Inc. and later as a fabric buyer at Ralph Lauren, where her eye for textiles flourished on a global scale.
In 2009, Katrina's passion for interiors led her to the esteemed firm Sawyer | Berson, marking the beginning of her ascent in the design world. By 2014, she co-founded Hernandez Greene, a New York-based design firm that swiftly garnered attention for its impeccable work, earning accolades from publications like Architectural Digest and Elle Décor.
What sets Katrina apart is her approachable design ethos, characterized by polished yet comfortable spaces infused with layers of sophistication. Her innate ability to blend client preferences with her refined-bohemian style results in interiors that feel both curated and inviting. This signature aesthetic has seamlessly transitioned to the West Coast since Katrina's move to Los Angeles in 2019, where she continues to make her mark on a diverse array of projects.
During my time with Katrina, we ventured to her shop located on the west side of Santa Monica, nestled near the Proper Hotel. Stepping into the space felt like entering a sanctuary of style and creativity. With an array of accessories adorning the shelves, from throws and pillows to candles and books, it was evident that every item was thoughtfully curated to elevate any interior.
One aspect that particularly stood out was Katrina's passion for supporting artisans, both locally and beyond. Her shop not only showcases her own creations, such as meticulously crafted pillows and fabric mirrors, but also features a curated selection of art from contemporary artisans and vintage finds. Each piece, whether it be a hand-dyed fabric or a coffee ground-infused masterpiece, is custom-framed, adding an extra layer of sophistication to the space.
As we perused the shop, Katrina shared her enthusiasm for hosting events and welcoming fellow designers and clients alike. The shop's meeting table stood as a testament to her commitment to fostering community within the design industry, providing a space for collaboration and inspiration to flourish.
