Returning to Nature

My husband and I headed to the west coast earlier this month for a family member’s wedding and to visit the area. We went on a creative detour and explored Northern California via the Pacific Coast Highway!

From Yurt living, to walking through Venice Beach, the great outdoors did not disappoint.

Let’s dive into how “returning to nature” can be done through off-the-grid living and through artwork that is directly related to nature.

Returning To Nature: Off-The-Grid Living

We stayed in this amazing Yurt on the West Coast!

Outdoor living, or off-the-grid culture, is becoming more prevalent as it is one of the most sustainable ways to live, especially for millennials.

Yurts are increasingly popular as semi-permanent and permanent off-grid structures. Their low cost and DIY friendly construction mean that debt-free living is possible for anyone. They are also popular to stay in while traveling, instead of a traditional hotels or Air B&B’s.

Here are some more photos of the amazing Yurt we stayed in!

Yurts are not a new concept. For thousands of years, nomadic tribes of Mongolia and other part of Central Asia relied on yurts for their sturdiness and easy setup and teardown.

Contrary to popular beliefs, yurts can be lived in year around and can last a long time. Their aerodynamic shape is great for harsh weather conditions and they are actually very secure, just like a normal home.

Sustainability is much bigger than recycling and composting. Living with nature can be one of the most sustainable ways of living with the planet, while still having access to modern day items. Many consider a yurt a live structure, as it is built to flex and move with the wind and bring with it a feeling of being part of the outside. There are no ceilings to stop the feeling of connectedness with the outdoors.

Returning To Nature: Artwork

Throughout my travels, I was also inspired by how much nature influences the artwork and marketing we see everyday.

A walk through Venice beach and Abbot Kinney Blvd reminded me that even in everyday work life, we are inspired by organic art that is directly related to nature.

Here are some examples from our West Coast detour:

After the trip, I pass on the inspiration photos I take to the team at Design Works International. Our in-house artists take this great imagery, and turn it into nature - inspired surface pattern designs for our clients.

Be on the lookout for more nature and design inspiration, as I plan on hiking the Bryce and Zion Canyons in September.
